The first and most sacred Pushtimarg Mahateerth — birthplace of Shri Mahaprabhuji
Shri Vallabhacharya (1479–1531 CE), reverently known as Mahaprabhuji, was a great Vaishnava saint, philosopher, and founder of the Pushti Marg. He established the Shuddhadvaita (pure non-dualism) school of Vedanta and was born at this very spot — making Champaran Dham the most sacred site of the tradition he founded.
Son of Shri Lakshmana Bhatt and Smt. Ilambika, Mahaprabhuji was born prematurely during a difficult journey. His parents placed the infant in a hollow tree overnight; the next morning they found him safe, luminous, surrounded by divine light. This miraculous beginning marked Champaran as a most sacred land.
The Pushti Marg (Path of Grace) is a devotional tradition focused on selfless, loving service (seva) to Shri Krishna. It emphasizes that liberation comes through Krishna's grace (pushti) rather than through individual effort alone. Mahaprabhuji established this path at Gaya in 1495, when he received a divine vision of Shri Krishna.
The tradition is characterized by rich art, music (especially Haveli Sangeet), and the practice of elaborate daily seva rituals. The Brahma Sambandha mantra, composed by Mahaprabhuji, is the initiation mantra of this path. Today the tradition has millions of followers across India and the world.
Shri Mahaprabhuji's philosophical system of Shuddhadvaita (Pure Monism) holds that the Supreme Being (Brahman) is Shri Krishna, and that the world is a real manifestation of Krishna, not an illusion. The relationship between the Lord and the devotee is one of love — not knowledge or effort.
The soul, once purified through devotion, becomes fit to serve the Lord. The jiva (individual soul) is distinct from but inseparable from Brahman — just as waves are distinct yet inseparable from the ocean.
During his three all-India tours (parikramas), Shri Mahaprabhuji conducted 84 sacred sittings (baithaks) across India. At each, he expounded on the Bhagavata, initiated disciples, and blessed the land. These 84 sites are all revered pilgrimage spots for Vaishnavs.
Champaran Dham holds the first and most exalted position among all 84 baithaks — as the birthplace of Mahaprabhuji, it is the source from which all other sacred sites draw their sanctity.
Champa-aranya (forest of Champa flowers) was blessed with divine presence from time immemorial. Associated with events from the Puranas, this sacred land was destined to become the greatest seat of Pushti Bhakti.
Shri Vallabhacharya was born at Champaran during a journey. Placed in a hollow tree by his parents, the infant was found next morning surrounded by divine light. His very birthplace became the most sacred site of his tradition.
Shri Mahaprabhuji conducted three all-India tours, establishing 84 sacred baithaks. He expounded the Bhagavata, initiated thousands of disciples, and established the Pushti Marg tradition across the subcontinent.
At Gaya, Mahaprabhuji received a divine vision of Shri Krishna instructing him to initiate devotees into Pushti Bhakti. He composed the Brahma Sambandha mantra and began initiating disciples — founding the tradition now followed by millions.
The principal shrine — Shri Dwarikesh Bhavan — was established as the permanent place of worship at Champaran Dham. The divine svarupa of Shri Dwarikesh was consecrated with elaborate Pushti rituals.
The Shri Champaran Dham Trust undertook extensive renovation and professional management. New pilgrim facilities, enhanced shrine interiors, and modern amenities have been added while preserving the ancient sanctity of this first teerth of Pushtimarg.
